– Why EN 50155 Compliance Is Required
EN 50155 is the European standard for electronic equipment used on rolling stock. LED tubes installed on trains are considered electronic devices and must comply with this standard because:

Key Requirement and Explanation

Temperature range:   Railway systems experience extreme temperatures (typically -40°C to +85°C); LEDs must operate reliably in these conditions.
Power supply variations:  Train power systems may have voltage fluctuations, surges, and transients. LED drivers must be robust against these variations.
Shock and vibration resistance:  Train movement causes frequent vibrations and shocks. LED tubes must be mechanically robust and vibration-tested.
Ingress protection:  EN 50155 requires certain IP ratings (e.g., IP42~IP65) for protection against dust and moisture in train environments.
Service life and durability:  LED lighting must align with the long service cycles typical of railway systems (30,000–50,000+ hours).

– Why EN 50121-3-2 Compliance Is Required
EN 50121-3-2 is the standard for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of onboard railway equipment. LED tubes contain electronic drivers, which may emit or be affected by electromagnetic interference. This standard ensures:

EMC Consideration and Importance
Conducted emissions:  Prevents electrical noise on power lines that could interfere with train systems.
Radiated emissions:  Ensures LED tubes do not emit radio-frequency interference affecting communication, control, or safety systems.
Immunity to interference:  LED tubes must resist external EMC sources such as high-voltage systems, transformers, or other onboard electronics.

Trains have compact electronic environments with safety-critical systems (e.g., braking, communication, signaling), so any non-compliant device could compromise operational safety.

  • So we conclude as follows
    EN 50155 Ensures the LED tube is mechanically and electrically reliable for onboard use.
    EN 50121-3-2 Ensures the LED tube is EMC-safe and does not interfere with or is affected by other train systems.

In short, these standards protect the integrity of railway operations. Any LED lighting used as a retrofit in train applications must meet both EN 50155 and EN 50121-3-2 to be considered safe, durable, and certifiable.
